How to Repair a Dead Car Key Extreme heat or cold can sometimes cause the car to stop functioning. Wait a while before replacing it. If your car keys are damaged it can be a major problem. Broken Key Ring The chip inside the key fob is the one that communicates with the car's immobilizer system in order to start the engine. If this chip becomes damaged or there are programming errors, the key fob will not be able send the correct identification code, and your car will not start. A malfunctioning transponder could be caused by physical damage to the key shell, or wear and tear on the contact pads. Often when a key fob begins to fail to communicate with the vehicle's immobilizer system and you notice specific warning signs on the dashboard. These can include error messages, flashing lights or the key not locking or unlocking the vehicle. If you see these warnings, contact your local locksmith immediately to request a replacement key fob or repair. It's very easy to cause damage to the ring of your keys by applying too excessive pressure on it, especially when carrying a lot of keys. This could cause the key fob to break in half, which is one of the most common causes of car keys breaking. If this happens, you can try to use super glue to fix the issue by applying a small amount of the glue to both sides of the break and pressing them in a controlled manner. Use a gel-type of glue that drys slowly to prevent drips or runniness. Broken Key Loop One of my MK5 keysfobs snapped off the tiny key ring on the top, where it joins the keyfob. It's made of plastic or soft metal.
